04Location pages

Pages for the areas you serve

If you serve several areas, create genuinely useful pages for each, with local detail, not copy-paste text with the suburb swapped.

05Step by step

Local SEO
in seven steps

If you do nothing else, work through this list in order. The first two steps do most of the work.

The steps
1. Claim your Business ProfileClaim or create it at business.google.com and fill in every field: hours, services, description and photos.
2. Make your details identicalName, address and phone number must match everywhere. Even St vs Street or +27 vs 0 counts as a mismatch.
3. Add LocalBusiness schemaTell Google what you are and where, in a format it reads directly. Homepage and contact page at minimum.
4. List on SA directoriesConsistent citations build local authority and are often where Google first finds your details.
5. Ask for and answer reviewsReview volume and recency are local ranking factors. Reply to every one, good or bad.
6. Build location pagesOne page per area you serve, each with its own content. Not the same page with the town name swapped.
7. Post on your Profile weeklyOffers, news and new services. Five minutes a week keeps the listing active.

South African directories
worth listing on

Start with Google, then work down the list. Use exactly the same business details on every one.

The quickest win: a complete, photo-rich Business Profile with a steady flow of genuine reviews. Most local competitors have a sparse one.

07Mistakes

Local SEO mistakes
that cost rankings

These are the ones that come up again and again with South African businesses.

Avoid
Using a PO BoxGoogle needs a physical address. A PO Box keeps you out of Maps and the local pack.
Stuffing keywords into your name"Best Plumber Cape Town Plumbing" breaks Google's guidelines and can get the listing suspended.
Mismatched detailsRd vs Road, different phone formats: small differences dilute the signal.
Ignoring bad reviewsA calm, professional reply often impresses more than the review itself.
No location pages"We serve Cape Town" on the homepage is not the same as a page about your service in Cape Town.

Frequently asked
questions

How long does local SEO take?

Profile and listing improvements can show results within weeks. Competitive local rankings usually take a few months of consistent work.

Do I need a physical address?

You need a genuine business presence. Service-area businesses can hide their address and still rank in the areas they serve.

Why do worse competitors rank higher?

Usually because their profile, reviews and listings are more complete and consistent. That is fixable.
